The Essential Guide to Obtaining an HGV Licence


HGV licence allows you to drive a vehicle over 7.5 tonnes up to 32 tonnes. The licence is divided into the following categories: C, C+E, C1, C1+E, and Cat D. HGV licence is valid for up to 5 years. It is issued by Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA). In order to become a Heavy Goods Vehicle driver, you must:

  • Full car licence.
  • Above the age of 18 years.
  • To obtain a professional driving qualification called the driver Certificate of Professional Competence (CPC).

In order to maintain your licence, you must complete 35 hours of training every 5 years. After the age of 65, you will have to renew your licence every year.
